Sainsbury’s has announced the launch of its new laundry liquid detergent packaging in all stores and online this week, designed to help customers reduce plastic at home. The new packaging will help to save around 22 tonnes of plastic annually.
The change is across all own-brand 750ml laundry detergents*, replacing sleeved plastic bottle packaging with cardboard cartons. The products are available across Sainsbury’s tropical super concentrated, bio super concentrated, non-bio super concentrated, colour super concentrated and lavender super concentrated lines.
Customers can conveniently recycle the packaging at kerbside or deposit the packaging at recycling banks.
The new cartons, which are 35% lighter than the original packaging and will take 13 lorries off the road annually, won’t just reduce plastic but will also reduce carbon emissions of this range by 50%**. The move will help the retailer make progress against its ambitious target to be net zero in its own operations by 2035.
The laundry liquid has also been reformulated and is now super concentrated, and as a result a smaller amount of detergent is required per wash, allowing for five additional washes per carton.
This step is the latest in a string of plastic reductions across Sainsbury’s household range as part of the retailer’s ongoing commitment to halve its use of own brand plastic packaging by 2025. Last year, Sainsbury’s launched its 1L refillable handwash pouches, which use 85% less plastic, removing 28 tonnes of plastic every year and are 35% lower in cost compared to the equivalent bottles. The retailer also launched double-length toilet rolls, reducing plastic packaging by 30% equating to 84 tonnes of plastic saved.
